I would love to help you discover one of the world's most fascinating languages — Japanese.
I spent 27 years working in international finance, living and working across cultures and using English as my daily professional language. Those years gave me a deep, practical understanding of what cross-cultural communication really means — not just vocabulary and grammar, but the subtle rhythms, unspoken assumptions, and cultural textures that make a language truly come alive. That experience shaped the way I think about language, and the way I teach it.
I later earned a doctorate from the University of Cambridge and went on to spend 13 years as a university professor. I am currently a researcher at a leading Japanese university. Throughout my academic career I have worked constantly at the boundary between Japanese and English — translating, writing, and teaching — and that sustained bilingual practice has given me a deep, nuanced feel for both languages and the space between them.
In the classroom, I bring all of that experience to you — not as abstract theory, but as genuine insight into how Japanese works, why it works that way, and how a foreign learner can most naturally find their way into it. My lessons are relaxed, personalised, and always built around your goals. There is no single right way to learn a language, and I will never try to fit you into a fixed mould.
