Shiki-sensei is an expert Japanese language teacher who takes time to access learners each lesson and tailor work to suit the level of the learner. I have been working with her for a year, and I am now reading Hiragana first grade level books. I am also more confident in my daily conversations with my Japanese friends (who have complimented my pronunciation too).

Shiki is an amazing tutor! She’s super patient and always makes lessons fit your pace and interests. We sometimes grab lunch or dinner together after café lessons, and even though she’s a total pro at teaching, she’s also really kind and easy to talk to — just like a friend. My Japanese needed a lot of work before I could try JLPT N1, so I when I saw Shiki advertising in-person lessons on Facebook, I went for it.

Shiki started off the lesson with an evaluation of my current level, without once falling into the usual “nihongo jyouzu” pretenses. She was able to tell me exactly what was “jyouzu” and what needed work for me to achieve my goals. It was honestly the perfect balance of motivation and reality check.

Weekly lessons with her were both productive and fun, and I firmly believe her lessons played a massive part in me passing N1 on my first try.

She has also given my parents and my little sister “basic travel Japanese” lessons that stuck with them! My 73 year old dad managing to order a coffee in Japanese on his own was something I cannot put into words. My sister manages simple yet adorable communication with my Japanese husband.

As such, I have no hesitation recommending Shiki as a Japanese teacher for everyone and anyone from low-key curiosity in learning Japanese to high-key “I’m going to go out and earn my nijongo jyouzus.”

Shiki-sensei is a very cheerful and fun teacher.
She is experienced, so she answers any questions kindly and thoroughly.
I had been studying on my own, but I wasn’t making much progress in speaking, so I decided to start lessons with her.
Even after just one lesson, I felt confident that I will improve from now on.
