I am an assistant English teacher in Hokkaido, Japan. I am passionate about teaching language in a fun and interactive way, often going above and beyond the textbook to teach the students skills essential for a solid understanding of the English language in my schools, and the Japanese language in tutoring. I aim above all for students to develop a love for the language as well as proficiency.

Previous Work Experience
2019 - present ALT on the JET Programme
My original role involved rotating around four elementary schools on a weekly basis, team-teaching English to students. However, since the pandemic began, my rotation has increased to include three junior high schools. For 5-6 classes a day, I teach students from 6-15 years old, using games and music to complement traditional language study. In my downtime, I plan lessons, adapt and tailor the curriculum to my students’ ability, and think of more out-of-the-box aspects of English to motivate and pique the interest of my students. As well as ensuring they have a solid grasp on the English curriculum, I aim to make them curious about the language, encouraging them to constantly ask ‘why?’, instead of simply rote-learning and accepting linguistic exceptions or words with unusual pronunciations at face-value. I have found that this approach leads students to develop a deeper interest in English, regularly coming up to me outside of class to ask further questions or to present some home study they have undertaken independently.
2014 - 2017 Receptionist at Lifestyle Health and Beauty Salon
This role incorporated many duties vital to the smooth running of the salon, such as greeting clients in a professional manner, managing clients’ appointments and payments, preparing rooms for treatments and making sure products were fully stocked at all times.
2014 Au pair in Nîmes, France (3 months)
My duties involved looking after and entertaining the two children (aged 3 and 10), including taking them out on day trips. In addition, I was responsible for taking them to and from school, helping with homework and teaching them English in as natural a setting as possible.
Volunteering Experience
2016 Participated in the Cardiff University Routes into Languages Initiative, which entailed language students visiting schools in Wales to encourage increased involvement in foreign language education.
2016 - 2018 Volunteer at The Harbour Project, Swindon, advising and supporting refugees and asylum seekers on legal matters, and assisting at English classes.
2014 - 2019 Informal and sporadic tutoring of English, French and Japanese to younger university students and others.
2019 - 2020 (April and December) Planning and leading adult ‘eikaiwa’ (English converstation) classes for Japanese local residents at the town community centre.
