My background is in intercultural communication — I’ve been teaching it at a Japanese university since 2016, first as an assistant professor and now as a lecturer.
Japanese teaching came later, and it came from the students. Working with international students, I kept meeting people who could pass a test but froze in a seminar, so I started running individual sessions to close that gap. Sitting across from students from Thailand, China, Nepal and elsewhere, untangling one sentence at a time, I found I loved it — so I went and earned the national Registered Japanese Language Teacher certification, which lets me teach from absolute beginner level up.
Outside of work I travel, cook, read a lot, and I’m always up for a conversation about politics or current events. Bring a topic you actually care about — that’s when language sticks.

Here’s how it usually works: you talk, and I listen closely. When something you say could sound more natural, I show you the version a native speaker would use, and explain what makes the difference. Not just “that’s wrong,” but “here’s why this one sounds smoother.” Most of the fun comes from those small upgrades — the moment a phrase you’ve been saying for months finally clicks.
As a university lecturer, I can break down the grammar behind it when you want the details, or skip the theory entirely if you’d rather keep talking. Your call.
I work with everyday conversation, keigo, interview prep, presentations, and JLPT. Complete beginners are welcome too — we’ll go at your pace.
