About me
Hi, I’m Kotaro, a passionate Shogi tutor from Japan.
I was a former member of the Japan Shogi Association’s Apprentice School (Shoreikai), trained professionally up to 2-kyu.
After leaving the Shoreikai, I continued to play actively at the university level and have also shared Shogi with players abroad during my time overseas.
I speak English, Japanese, and a bit of Spanish, so I can support learners from diverse backgrounds.
Whether you’re a complete beginner, a chess player curious about Shogi, or someone struggling to improve, I welcome all kinds of questions and learning styles.
I’m confident I can guide you to reach 1-dan level quickly with fun, personalized lessons.

Learn Shogi (Japanese Chess) from a Former Apprentice Professional
Hi, I’m Kota! I’m a native Japanese Shogi tutor with 10+ years of experience. I trained in the Japan Shogi Association’s Apprentice School (Shoreikai) and reached 2-kyu before choosing a different career path. Now, I share my passion for Shogi with students from all over the world.
My lessons are:
Perfect for beginners (basic rules, piece movement, tactics)
️ Great for intermediate players (strategy, opening theory, endgames)
Flexible and tailored to your level and goals
I teach in English or Japanese, and lessons are held online via Zoom or Google Meet. Students of all ages (10+) are welcome!
